The Cereal Institute of Mozambique (ICM) and representatives of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade have begun harmonising cooperation mechanisms for the procurement of rice under a future government-to-government (G2G) agreement that will enable Mozambique to secure supplies of the cereal on more competitive terms, the institute said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page.
According to the institute, the process was discussed during a working meeting held in Maputo on Wednesday, 24 June, between ICM Director-General Luís José Jobe Fazenda and a Vietnamese delegation led by Nguyen Minh Phuong, Director of the African Market Sub-Department at Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) currently under preparation, which is expected to be signed by the governments of Mozambique and Vietnam.
The MoU will establish the framework for bilateral cooperation on rice imports, creating an institutional mechanism aimed at ensuring greater efficiency, transparency and predictability in supplying the Mozambican market.
As one of the world’s two largest rice exporters, Vietnam is expected to provide Mozambique with access to a procurement mechanism offering high quality standards, greater supply security and more competitive prices, contributing to national food security and greater stability in the domestic market.
As a result of the meeting, the parties also identified a Vietnamese counterpart institution to the ICM that will coordinate the technical aspects of the cooperation between the two countries. The direct link between the two institutions is expected to speed up the operational and commercial procedures required to implement the future agreement.
The initiative forms part of the Mozambican government’s efforts to diversify and strengthen strategic international partnerships, ensuring sustainable access to essential food products and reinforcing the country’s grain supply mechanisms.
