MLANG, Cotabato — Prolonged extreme heat has begun to take a toll on agriculture in this town, where rice fields have dried up as the heat index climbed to as high as 40°C.
Farmers in several areas reported that their paddies have turned into parched land, with grasses browning due to lack of water.
The intense heat, combined with limited rainfall, has accelerated soil drying and raised concerns over possible crop losses.
According to residents, the condition has worsened in recent days, particularly during midday hours when temperatures peak. Without sufficient irrigation, many fields have started to crack and lose the moisture needed for rice growth.
Local authorities and agricultural workers are closely monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of crop damage. Farmers have been advised to conserve available water and explore alternative irrigation methods./coa
