EASTERN ARKANSAS — State ag officials say the harvest season is finally coming to a head.
Most of the state’s rice crop was planted in mid-April. That means harvest should be kicking into full gear starting this week, weather permitting.
Officials said the cooler, rainy conditions may be just what some farmers are looking for in order to keep moisture in the rice grain. The hot, humid conditions of a year ago led to an extremely dry, brittle grain.
Ag officials said milling yields have been somewhat better than last year and have been showing some improvement. It’s hoped that yields will continue to improve with milder harvest weather.
The hotter days and nights have led to weaker grains, and the additional moisture may reduce some of those problems. Meanwhile, grain yields have continued to be all over the map.
