Minister of Agriculture Amran: There is no permission to import medium rice

19 June 2026

Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman confirmed that the government would not issue a medium rice import permit in 2025. He also warned soybean importers not to raise prices excessively amid the impact of the global conflict.

Amran said that the national food needs reached around 68 million tons, while production was estimated at 73 million tons. According to Amran, there are still three commodities that are not self-sufficient, namely garlic, meat, and soybeans.

"The most important thing is that by 2025 there will be no medium rice import permits," said Amran at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, Thursday, June 18.

He said that Bulog's current stock reached 5.2 million tons, exceeding Bulog's warehouse capacity of only around 3 million tons.

"This means that Bulog today is renting a warehouse of 2.2 million tons. Those who are not sure, please go to Bulog warehouses throughout Indonesia," he said.

Amran also touched on the impact of the conflict between the United States, Iran, and Israel on food. He admitted that there was an impact, but the government wanted to take advantage of the positive side.

According to Amran, agricultural exports increased to Rp166 trillion, while imports fell by Rp41 trillion because Indonesia did not import rice.

For soybeans, Amran asked importers not to take excessive profits.

"Please have empathy, have a sense of concern for our brothers and sisters," he said.

He reminded that import permits could be a government control tool if there were entrepreneurs who arbitrarily raised prices.

"If someone raises it arbitrarily, I will make sure that the import permit does not come out for the next year," said Amran.

Amran also said rice was no longer the main contributor to inflation for two consecutive years.
