Govt. assures no rice shortage in Sri Lanka

17 September 2025

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne has reassured the public that there will be no rice shortage in the country.

Speaking at a press briefing, he stated that the Government has 47,500 metric tons of rice and over 12 million kilograms of paddy in storage, including a sufficient supply of Keeri Samba.

The Deputy Minister alleged that certain groups are attempting to create an artificial shortage to drive up prices.

He added that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is currently investigating the matter and will take legal action against those responsible.
