Conditions favourable for standing paddy crops, Iraq likely to import record volume this season

Global rice production is estimated at another record high in the 2025-26 season (October-September). The global trade is projected to be higher, though the jury is out on the carryover stocks, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said.

In its “Grain: World Markets and Trade”, the USDA said global rice production is expected to be a record high at 541 million tonnes (mt), while consumption is estimated at 542 mt. “Global trade is forecast up this month driven by Burma and the US. Consumption is slightly increased, primarily in Nigeria reflecting multi-year revisions,” it said.

The USDA has projected global trade at 62.04 mt, a tad higher than 2024-25. “Global stocks are forecast lower with reductions for Nigeria, the Philippines and Burma,” it said.
