After battling the heat for the first half of the week, much cooler temperatures returned to KELOLAND on Thursday, along with some showers. This moisture is much needed, as a majority of the area is in drought.
We did have a few small steps in the right direction going into summer, including portions of northern South Dakota getting out of abnormally dry conditions.
It is a different story farther to the south, as severe and extreme drought still lingers. Since June 2, we have had a few rounds of showers and thunderstorms, so did any of it help us out?
The answer is yes and no. The latest drought monitor updates released Thursday morning show improving conditions for portions of central and eastern South Dakota. Unfortunately, though, extreme drought has spread into southeastern KELOLAND.
We will have to continue to keep a close eye on the drought monitor as our skies stay mostly dry over this weekend and through early next week.
