Syngenta has struck a deal to commercialise a novel herbicide molecule discovered by Japan’s Kyoyu Agri, highlighting the crop protection giant’s willingness to source innovation externally as it looks to expand in Asia
Syngenta has entered a strategic collaboration with Kyoyu Agri Co. Ltd to bring a new rice herbicide based on the active ingredient Cyclopyranil to selected markets across Asia, underscoring the company’s continued appetite for external innovation.
The agreement will see Syngenta market products based on Cyclopyranil, a novel herbicide active ingredient developed by the Japanese agrochemical manufacturer, leveraging its own regulatory expertise, manufacturing capabilities and commercial network to scale the technology across key rice-growing regions.
External innovation strategy on show
The partnership is notable at a time when Syngenta has been linked with plans for a future Hong Kong IPO , with investors likely to scrutinise how the company balances investment in internal research with access to innovation from external sources.
Rather than bearing the full cost and risk of discovering new active ingredients itself, the deal demonstrates how major crop protection companies can complement their own R&D efforts by commercialising technologies developed by smaller specialist innovators.
