PNP prepares to assist DA in enforcing planned rice price cap

11 May 2026

As the national government prepares to stabilize the rice price and supply, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be there to ensure that everybody will comply.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. has expressed full readiness to support the enforcement of the government’s planned rice price cap intended to stabilize the pricing of rice in all public markets across the country.

This is in response to the statement of the Department of Agriculture (DA) that it is planning to tap the PNP and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for strict market surveillance on the pricing of rice in public markets and other stores.

The DA is currently awaiting an Executive Order to formally trigger the price ceiling for imported grains in a bid to keep rice prices steady and protect consumers from the impact of inflation.

“We are ready to extend all the necessary assistance in ensuring that rules and regulations under this plan are properly observed, similar to what our personnel are doing when it comes to other essential goods and basic commodities,” Nartatez stated.

“I have directed the local police to ensure the strategic deployment of their personnel in markets and groceries to check the prices of rice being imposed by retailers. Our personnel will also work closely with local chief executives regarding this matter,” he added.

In preparation for the enforcement, the PNP coordinated with local government units to ensure a seamless inspection process.

Nartatez emphasized that the police will act as a support mechanism for the DA and DTI. He stressed that the primary goal is to protect the purchasing power of Filipino families.

He advised the consumers to be active in reporting violators, even as it warned that retailers who ignore the mandate will face accountability once the government measures are implemented.
