The Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has defended the government’s decision to restrict rice import permits, saying the move is aimed at protecting local rice producers and curbing the smuggling of foreign rice into Uganda.
The minister says the government has so far issued 25 permits to eligible traders, with applications still open through an online system.
This follows complaints by rice traders that the ministry had limited the permits to only a few companies, leaving dozens of trucks stranded at the Mutukula border.
