India, the world’s top rice shipper, may extend an export tax on the parboiled variety as part of efforts to ease food inflation ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The move could keep world supply tight and send prices to new peaks, said a Bloomberg report.

The rice is being sold to consumers in five and 10 kgs packs and the grain will be available at more than 18,000 outlets and mobile vans across the country.

MANILA, Philippines  —The government lost P7.2 billion in tariff revenue last year due to the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) undervaluation of rice imports, a group alleged on Wednesday, noting that the amount could have been used to extend aid to farmers.

To curb rise in prices, the government has decided to sell subsidised grain through retail outlets under the Bharat rice initiative from next week, sources said.

The record exports are helping to alleviate tight supplies following the restrictions imposed last year by India, the world's biggest exporter, and will bolster Pakistan's depleted foreign exchange reserves, which are crucial for financing imports.
