India’s foodgrain production is projected to reach 348.7 million tonnes in the 2025–26 crop year (July–june), marking a 5.4% increase from 330.9 million tonnes a year earlier, according to the government’s second advance estimates released by the agriculture ministry on Tuesday.
The increase is largely driven by higher production of wheat, rice and maize, reflecting favourable crop conditions and expanded cultivation in several regions..
The ministry estimated kharif foodgrain production at 174.1 million tonnes, up from 166.4 million tonnes in the previous year. Meanwhile, rabi foodgrain output is pegged at 174.5 million tonnes, higher than the 164.5 million tonnes estimated in the second advance estimate of 2024–25.
Rice production is expected to remain robust. Kharif rice output is estimated at 123.9 million tonnes, compared with 120.7 million tonnes a year ago, while rabi rice production is projected at 16.7 million tonnes, up from 15.8 million tonnes previously. Wheat, the country’s primary rabi crop, is projected to see a notable increase, with production estimated at 120.2 million tonnes, compared with 115.4 million tonnes last year. The improvement reflects favourable weather conditions and stable sowing acreage across key wheat-growing states. Among pulses, tur production is estimated at 3.5 million tonnes, largely unchanged from the previous year. Chana output is projected to rise to 11.8 million tonnes from 11.5 million tonnes, while masur production is expected to decline slightly to 1.7 million tonnes from 1.8 million tonnes last year. Maize production is expected to register strong growth.
Kharif maize output is estimated at a record 30.2 million tonnes, compared with 24.8 million tonnes a year ago, while rabi maize production is pegged at 15.9 million tonnes, up from 12.4 million tonnes.in the oilseeds segment, kharif oilseed production is estimated at 26.5 million tonnes, down from 27.6 million tonnes a year ago, largely due to a decline in soybean output. Soybean production is projected at 12.7 million tonnes, compared with 15.1 million tonnes previously.
