Shipping giant Maersk has suspended its operations in the Middle East, becoming the second large shipping company to halt vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Danish logistics company has joined German shipping group Hapag-Lloyd in the decision after Iran made threats to compromise the security of vessels accessing the region’s key transportation route.
Maersk said it has been “closely monitoring the evolving security situation in the Middle East” in Friday’s statement.
“Following our latest risk assessment and operational review and considering the escalating conflict affecting safe navigation in the Gulf region, we have made the decision to temporarily suspend the FM1 Service (connecting Far East to Middle East) and as well the ME11 Service (connecting Middle East to Europe),” the company confirmed.
It added that the move is a precautionary measure taken to “ensure the safety of our personnel and vessels while minimizing operational disruption across our wider network.”
