Vietnam seeks to increase rice shipments to Canada

12 June 2025

As Canada is seeking to diversify its supply sources and reduce dependence on a single partner like the US, this presents a golden opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to expand their market share.

Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Canada, Tran Thu Quynh, said: “Canada is one of the seven largest rice importers in the world, with an annual demand worth around 500 million USD. About half of its rice imports come from the US. Vietnam has begun to increase rice exports to Canada under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and its ST25 rice variety has been well received by Canadian consumers.”

Vietnam is now among the top five rice exporters to Canada. At the recent SIAL exhibition in Toronto, Vietnam’s Lotus rice company attracted particular interest from Canadian importers. Its products, including jasmine rice, sushi rice – a variety of Japanese origin, and ST25 rice, have gained popularity in Canadian cities.

Vu Thi Hue, Lotus’ Sales Director, said: “We have exported rice to Canada but have not yet reached the expected volume. By participating in exhibitions like this, we hope to reach more customers and partners in order to boost exports to Canada, which has huge consumption demand.”
