American firm signs deal to import premium rice from Cambodia

25 September 2024

The Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) and Otis McAllister, Inc., an American corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on buying Cambodian premium rice for the markets in the US.

The MoU signing ceremony was held in San Francisco on Sunday.

Song Saran, Chairman of the Board of the CRF and Patrick Murphy, Executive Vice President for Rice and Grain Purchasing signed the agreement, witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, who is also the First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).

Under the MoU, CRF will provide high quality rice, including Cambodian jasmine rice, fragrant rice, SKO and SRO rice, as well as varieties of white rice at competitive prices and guaranteed delivery in a timely manner.

The MoU is the basis for future cooperation to strengthen business cooperation and further enhance the export of Cambodian rice to the US market, Chanthol said in a post on his official Facebook page on Monday.

Following the signing of the MoU, the presence of rice under the ‘Made in Cambodia’ brand is expected to increase in the United States, especially in the supermarkets, he added.

The MoU will bring more Cambodian rice to the US market shelves where customers can find Made-in-Cambodia rice brand, said Saran.

“Under the MoU between CRF and Otis McAllister, Inc, we will expand and promote our rice widely in the US markets and make it easy for customers, particularly Cambodian people living in the US, to buy Cambodian rice,” Saran told Khmer Times on Monday.

The MoU signed after Otis McAllister, Inc. conducted a visit to Cambodia in June to get first-hand information about the quality of premium rice in Cambodia. The firm at that time held a number of meetings with local rice millers, besides various ministries and institutions.

They also made site visits to rice fields and agricultural cooperatives.

Cambodia exported 412,023 tonnes of milled rice in the first eight months this year, with a revenue of $305 million, a CRF report showed. Fifty-three companies shipped milled rice to 65 countries and regions during the period.
