New herbicide collaboration targets weed resistance in Asian rice fields

14 October 2026

A new partnership between agricultural technology companies Syngenta and Japan’s Kyoyu Agri will introduce herbicide solutions containing Cyclopyranil to selected rice-producing markets across Asia, with the aim of addressing growing weed resistance.

Cyclopyranil, developed by Kyoyu Agri, works by inhibiting the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) enzyme, placing it in Herbicide Group 14. It is the first rice herbicide in Syngenta’s portfolio to use this mode of action. The compound targets a broad range of grass and broadleaf weeds, including species resistant to other herbicide groups such as ACCase and ALS. It can also be applied before or after weeds emerge, providing flexibility in crop management.

The collaboration comes amid increasing concerns over herbicide-resistant weeds in rice cultivation. Researchers have recorded more than 190 cases of such resistance in rice production systems worldwide. Barnyard grass is among the major threats, as it competes with rice for nutrients and other essential resources while closely resembling the crop, making early detection difficult.

Under the agreement, Syngenta will market Cyclopyranil-based products in several Asian countries through its distribution network. Both companies say the initiative is intended to give rice farmers additional options for managing resistant weeds and protecting crop yields.
