Whether we’re whipping up big batches of Louisiana-style dirty rice, creamy chicken and rice, beans and rice, Stick-of-Butter Tennessee onion rice, or classic Hoppin’ John, rice is a big part of Southern cuisine. That means that most Southerners have a bag or box of rice in the pantry and that means most of us are going to have to go see if that rice is part of the latest recall.
Back in April, we reported on a nationwide recall that had been issued for jasmine rice that was sold at major retailers, including Wegmans, Target, Walmart, Giant, and Hy-vee stores. Wegmans grocery chain issued a recall notice on April 4 for Lundberg Organic Jasmine White Rice due to the possible presence of foreign material. Now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded that recall.
The affected rice is from Lundberg Family Farm and was sold in 32-ounce packages. The jasmine white rice was distributed in Southern states, including Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee, as well as other states across the nation. A total of 27,324 packages are affected by the recall.
The packages contain the UPC code 073416040281 and have best-before dates of February 1 and 2, 2027. Additionally, they contain the lot numbers 260201MA and 260202MA.
While it’s unclear what foreign material may be present in the rice, it’s clearly a health risk, hence the recall. Customers who have the affected products in their homes should not consume them and instead throw them away. Luckily, the recall is only for Jasmine White Rice, so Carolina Gold Rice Middlins and Wild Rice Salad With Collards and Bacon are still on the menu.
