Rice production set to decline 760,000 tonnes this year

17 October 2024

The expected decline in output comes after last year’s harvests already yielded significantly less than the preceding year’s.

National rice production is expected to fall by 760,000 tonnes this year, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) estimates.

Acting BPS head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said that the agency projected rice production to decline 2.43 percent year-on-year (yoy) to just 30.34 million tonnes this year.

The estimate is based on the fact that rice output in the January-April period reached only 1.91 million tonnes, marking a steep decline of 14.74 percent yoy.

Meanwhile, the rice harvest area this year is estimated at 10.05 million hectares, which is 17,000 ha less than in 2023.

“The rice harvesting area has decreased due to the [weather phenomenon] El Niño in the second half of 2023, causing a delay in the planting season,” Amalia said in a press conference on Tuesday, as reported by Kontan.
