Rain continues to challenge Arkansas rice growers as planting deadline nears

26 May 2025

LITTLE ROCK — Officials with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Research and Extension Service say rains continue to be a problem for the state’s rice growers.

Jarrod Hardke, the state’s rice agronomist, said the forecast heading into the week called for little rain, warmer temperatures and more sunshine.

Hardke said the area once again received more rain than expected. He said that while the warmer temperatures have helped, there still hasn’t been enough sunshine.

Hardke said rice is approaching 90 percent planted with the May 25 prevented planting date on the horizon. That’s Sunday. After that date, he said rice planting may still be successful, but the success of that yield will begin to drop.

Hardke said yields starting in late May will greatly depend on the weather.
