MANILA – Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on Monday stressed that the P20 rice program under the “Benteng Bigas Meron (BBM) Na” serves as a strategic intervention instead of a mere subsidy to vulnerable Filipinos.
To date, the PHP20 per kilo rice has reached more than 6 million beneficiaries in 82 provinces nationwide, underscoring its growing reach and impact.
The beneficiaries include senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), solo parents, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries and minimum wage earners, farmers, fishers, transport workers and education personnel.
“The P20 Rice Project is not merely a subsidy – It is a strategic intervention to stabilize prices, protect vulnerable households, and guarantee a reliable market for our farmers. We cannot afford to slow down,” Tiu Laurel said.
The DA expanded the BBM Na in Roxas City, Capiz during its 125th founding anniversary at the Capiztahan Festival.
At least 1,000 beneficiaries from the vulnerable families accessed the government-subsidized rice during the initial rollout.
Tiu Laurel said the aggressive expansion not only cushions the impact of the recent oil price surges but also ensures the advancement of food security targets.
“At a time when global supply disruptions and price volatility continue to challenge food systems, we must decisively pursue President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s flagship food security program,” he said.
The PHP20 per kilo rice is available in 661 Kadiwa ng Pangulo centers, kiosks and other DA-accredited sites nationwide. (PNA)
