The government has increased its rice reserve to 300,000 tonnes to act as a buffer against potential supply shocks

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the move ensures there's enough rice supply to meet the people's needs amid the global energy crisis caused by the ongoing geopolitical turmoil in West Asia.

According to the New Straits Times, he noted that the government is closely monitoring the situation to ensure basic needs remain protected.

On 13 March 2026, Mohamad said the government agreed to expand the national rice reserve to ensure it meets the country's needs for nine months

In a Facebook post, Mohamad urged Malaysians to play their part in maintaining the national rice supply.

Mohamad also urged Malaysians to remain frugal and avoid food wastage

The minister added that these logistical efforts are vital in keeping the nation's food security strong.

"All these efforts are to ensure the nation's food security remains strong, and that every citizen continues to enjoy sufficient and secure supplies," he said.
