Indonesia’s Rice Production Rises 38.56 Percent in Early 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national rice production in January 2026 reached 1.75 million tons, a 38.56 percent increase compared to 1.26 million tons in January 2025. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said the figure reflects stronger harvest performance at the start of the year.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono, presented the data on Monday, March 2, 2026. “Rice production equivalent for public consumption in January 2026 was 1.75 million tons, up 38.56 percent from 1.26 million tons in January 2025,” he said, as quoted on the ministry’s official website.

Projections for the February-April 2026 period also show an upward trend. Rice production is estimated to reach 12.23 million tons, bringing cumulative production for January–April 2026 to 13.98 million tons.

At the upstream level, paddy production in January 2026 was recorded at 3.04 million tons of dry-milled unhusked rice (GKG), compared to 2.20 million tons in January 2025. Potential paddy production from February to April 2026 is estimated at 21.24 million tons of GKG, with total production for the first four months projected at 24.28 million tons of GKG.

The increase is supported by expanded harvested areas. In January 2026, theharvested area reached 0.57 million hectares. From February to April 2026, thepotential harvested area is projected at 3.92 million hectares, bringing the total for January–April 2026 to 4.48 million hectares.

Geographically, the largest harvest in the February–April 2026 period will remain concentrated on Java, particularly in East Java, Central Java, West Java, and Banten. Outside Java, significant production potential is expected in Lampung, South Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh in Sumatra; South Sulawesi in Sulawesi; West Kalimantan in Kalimantan; and West Nusa Tenggara in the Nusa Tenggara region.
