NEW DELHI – India has pledged to provide fortified rice to help people in crisis around the world, strengthening its partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) in the fight against global hunger.
The Indian government and the WFP signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to formalize the collaboration. By sourcing rice from India, a country with agricultural surplus, the WFP can deliver life-saving food more effectively to those in need.
“India is committed to the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family,” said Indian officials, highlighting the humanitarian spirit behind the initiative.
WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau praised India’s contribution, noting its importance as food insecurity rises globally and humanitarian funding remains limited. “This partnership shows our shared commitment to support those in need and strengthen global hunger relief efforts,” he said.
The LoI follows discussions at the February 2025 Executive Board side event in Rome, where Indian officials and WFP representatives explored ways to work together. The agreement sets the stage for a reliable supply of food grains for humanitarian aid. (IANS)
