SERDANG: The government will finalise the revision of the price ceiling for local white rice by October, says agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu.
He said the matter was still at the discussion stage but would be finalised soon.
“By October. Not much longer,” he said after launching the 2024 Malaysia Agriculture Horticulture & Agrotourism Show here today.
Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, said the review of the price ceiling was taking some time as it involved several other ministries.
“Not just my ministry, but also the economy ministry as well as the domestic trade and cost of living ministry,” he said.
Last November, the padi and rice regulatory division under the agriculture and food security ministry said that the price ceiling for local white rice should be increased from RM2.60 to RM3.20 per kg.
Its director-general Azman Mahmood said the last review was conducted 15 years ago, and that the increase was necessary to protect the welfare of rice farmers and prevent stockpiling due to millers losing interest in purchasing rice at the current price.
