Pakistan is betting on China’s food market to expand its agricultural exports and generate revenue. The 60,000-tonne shipment is part of Islamabad’s wider push for more export income
Pakistan is set to export 60,000 tonnes of rice to China’s Guangzhou and Shenzhen provinces this year as Islamabad looks to increase agricultural shipments to one of the world’s largest food markets.
The move comes as Pakistan continues to face economic pressures, including foreign exchange challenges and the need to strengthen export earnings. The deal, signed by the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), is expected to generate export orders worth around $300 million to $400 million, according to the trade body.
A 20-member REAP delegation is currently visiting China until July 28 to finalise agreements and expand trade cooperation. REAP Vice Chairman Javed Jilani described the discussions as “very productive”, citing strong Chinese demand for imported rice.
Pakistan plans to export both Basmati and non-Basmati varieties under the new arrangements.
