Abdur Rashid, a leading rice trader in the country, has been arrested on charges of fraud, including taking money without delivering goods and cheque forgery.
He was arrested on Saturday afternoon by the Kushtia Model police station.
Abdur Rashid is the president of the central committee of the Rice Mill Owners Association and the head of Rashid Agro Food.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model police station, Sihabur Rahman Sihab, said that Rashid has multiple cases and warrants against him.
He was arrested in a check forgery case filed by agricultural entrepreneur Atikur Rahman from Puthia police station, Rajshahi.
It is reported that Atikur Rahman paid an advance of Tk13,364,867 to Rashid via check for raw materials for a feed mill.
Rashid did not supply the goods for over one and a half years and did not respond when asked for a refund.
Atikur Rahman filed a case against Rashid and his manager on August 13, 2023, at the Rajshahi Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
Despite court summons, Rashid did not appear, leading to an arrest warrant.
Rashid, who had been absconding, was finally arrested on Friday.
Police sources indicate Rashid has at least 110 cases against him nationwide and over a hundred warrants.
He reportedly remained untouchable due to his close ties with former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder during the Awami League government, although he had secured bail in some cases.
