Jorhat, Nov 4: The Assam Rice Research Institute (ARRI) in Titabar has introduced a new drought-resistant rice variety named 'Arun', honoring the legacy of esteemed agricultural scientist Dr. Arun Pathak.
Agriculture Minister Atul Bora unveiled this variety during the Kisaan Diwas (Farmers’ Day) celebrations at the institute on Tuesday.
The event included a farmers’ fair, recognition of outstanding cultivators from the state, and the introduction of various new agricultural initiatives.
Minister Bora shared that Dr. Pathak had personally selected the name 'Arun' for this rice variety while he was alive.
He emphasized that the drought-resistant features of this new variety would significantly assist farmers facing challenges due to unpredictable rainfall and climate change.
Bora stated, “We need to adapt to the evolving weather conditions. Innovations like this will greatly support our farmers,” highlighting the necessity of developing crops that can withstand climate variations to ensure the agricultural sustainability of Assam.
This newly introduced rice variety is anticipated to support farmers in managing the adverse effects of erratic weather, particularly in Assam.
In 2025, 27 districts in Assam experienced severe drought conditions due to a rainfall deficit exceeding 40%, leading the state government to implement urgent measures to address the crisis.
Additionally, the Minister distributed over a thousand areca nut saplings to farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and encouraging crop diversification.
Reflecting on the institute's long-standing history, Bora noted that the Titabar center is one of the most significant agricultural research facilities in Assam.
“Founded in 1923, following the establishment of the first research station in Karimganj in 1913, this Rice Research Station has achieved remarkable advancements in research and crop development. In 2023, it was recognized by ICAR as the Best Rice Research Station in the country,” he remarked.
The Assam Rice Research Institute, established in 1923, continues to spearhead agricultural innovation in the region through its focus on seed research and farmer-centric programs.
The event saw participation from Kaziranga MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah, Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vidyut Chandan Deka, along with over a hundred farmers from various districts.
