CRF denies involvement Thai-branded rice on sale in China

30 June 2025

The Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) has denied any connection to Thai-branded rice which is currently being marketed online in China. The five-kilogramme packages are labelled in Thai and marked with a design resembling the Thai national flag, while being marketed as a a Cambodian product.

In a June 29 statement, the CRF informed the public that after conducting a thorough review and investigation of all CRF members who export rice to China, and in collaboration with CCIC (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. – a Chinese quality inspection company – the federation confirmed that the packaging was not printed in Cambodia.

“Nearly all rice exported from Cambodia to China is packed in 25 or 50-kilogramme sacks. The federation categorically rejects any association with packaging that bears a design resembling the Thai national flag,” it clarified.

“Cambodia strictly adheres to trademark laws and regulations prohibiting unfair competition, which include bans on the use of any symbol that is identical to, similar to, or partially resembles the national flags of any other countries around the world,” it added.

According to the latest CRF data, Cambodia exported a total of 344,199 tonnes of rice from January to May 2025, an increase of 13.7% compared to the same period in 2024. These exports generated $252.3 million, up 15%. Of that, 90,665 tonnes (worth $53.25 million) were shipped to China and its autonomous regions.

In 2024, Cambodia exported a total of 651,522 tons of rice, earning $491.19 million. Among them, 117,925 tons (worth $75.66 million) were sold to China and its autonomous regions.
