“Our presence in rice will further increase in India. Rice faces the challenges of sheath blight and brown plant hopper. Sheath blight, which is widely spread across, hits the crop at the maximum tillering stage. If it is not controlled in time, it can incur losses ranging from 25 per cent to 50 per cent,” Giridhar Ranuva, Business Director (Agricultural Solutions) of BASF India, said.

“These solutions will help rice growers boost their rice yields as they help manage rice hoppers, a key rice pest, and control diseases such as sheath blight control,” Marko Grozdanovic, Senior Vice-President, Global Strategic Marketing & Sustainability at BASF Agricultural Solutions, has said.

The brown plant hopper challenge is not as widespread as sheath blight but, if not controlled in time, can result in output losses up to 40-50 per cent.

Controlling these issues is seen as a ‘huge opportunity’ to help Indian rice farmers increase their productivity and address the need for higher yields in India.

Stating that China’s rice yield is way ahead at 7 tonnes a hectare compared to India’s 4.2 tonnes a hectare, he said that there was an “imminent need” for India to work with its rice farmers to help them increase their productivity.

“India’s population is expected to reach 150 crore by 2030, with an additional 10 crore people expected by then. Given this projected growth, ensuring sufficient food supply for the population becomes paramount,” he said.
