Australia committed to help improve rice varieties

22 October 2024

Australia is committed to improving rice variety and boosting Cambodia’s rice export market, said Australian Ambassador to Cambodia Derek Yip.

During a recent visit to the Amru Rice Factory, a leading rice export firm and agricultural cooperative in Kampong Thom province, Ambassador Yip reiterated Australia’s commitment to continuing the program to improve rice variety and boost the internal rice export market.

The Ambassador led a delegation to witness the Amru Rice processing value chain firsthand, from the careful selection of qualified paddy grains to the high-quality production standards of rice processing.

He also met and discussed with the representatives of Agriculture Cooperative, which partners with Amru Rice in supplying organic rice, SRP rice and Regenerative Agriculture practices for rice production.

Besides, he witnessed the rice value chain processing at the factory as well as the coordination of Agriculture Cooperative to explore the possibility of improving the farmers’ productivity, ESG compliance, trade, investment and agri-food industrial park, especially to pave the way for connecting leading rice exporter as Amru Rice with the global buyers through the Cambodian-Australian Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) to promote Cambodian rice exports.

Ambassador Yip explained how the Australian Government has been supporting the Cambodian rice sector, especially since the establishment of the Cambodia-Australia Agricultural Value Chain Program (CAVAC), by working with the private sector, such as Amru Rice as well as the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) in the development of new and improved rice varieties to meet international market preferences and boost the internal rice export market.

“The Australian government continues to join hands with the Royal Government of Cambodia to build sustainable, resilient and inclusive economic growth, especially to achieve the vision of exporting 1 million tonnes of rice by 2025 by connecting exporters like Amru Rice with global buyers through CAPRED,” Yip said.

Amru Rice (Cambodia) CEO Song Saran appreciated the Australian government’s ongoing support to the Cambodian rice sector and Amru Rice.

“Partnerships with Australia since CAVAC and now CAPRED are crucial for advancing Cambodia’s rice industry and ensuring farmers benefit from improved productivity and fair-trade practices,” Saran said.

He also highlighted Amru Rice’s dedication to sustainable practices, which align with the growing global demand for eco-friendly and socially responsible products.

The Australian government has supported the Cambodian agriculture sector and Amru Rice since CAVAC over the past decade.

Figures from the CFR showed that Cambodia exported a total of 401,699 tonnes of milled rice in the first eight months of this year, earning some $278 million in revenue.

Exported milled rice varieties included premium aromatic rice, fragrant rice, long grain white rice, parboiled rice, and organic rice, it pointed out.
